A number of associations now require members to offer paid internships and adopt policies that offer interns at least the minimum wage based on the local market. PR Council is just one association requiring members to pay interns regardless of whether students receive college credits. President Kim Sample says, “By making it crystal clear that our members pay interns, we avoid any misperceptions and misinformation. When we recently surveyed members, we found a few points of confusion, including whether some colleges and universities require that internships be unpaid.” Even large companies offer paid internships, and some say this could increase competition for these programs. A recent Glassdoor survey of the highest-paying internships found that Facebook offers a monthly salary of $8,000, Amazon offers $7,725 monthly and Salesforce offers $7,667. Even Congress is working on changes to ensure its interns are compensated for their work.
