Coming in at No. 35 out 182, Chicago has made Wallet Hub’s 2018 list of the best cities for people with disabilities. Chicago’s most shining quality? Residents’ proximity to parks.

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month, and the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) is celebrating more than 70 years of disability inclusion. With a theme of “America’s Workforce: Empowering All,” here are some ways your team can join in the celebration.

Raise Awareness

Put disability in the spotlight and work with your marketing team to highlight this important month publicly. Whether sharing the official poster through your organization’s online communities or elevating conversations already in the zeitgeist via the official hashtag #NDEAM.

Celebrate History

The ODEP built an incredible timeline for the Americans with Disabilities Act’s 25th anniversary in 2015. Raise some of the key moments with your employees and solicit ideas for what your HR department can do next.

Share Your Organization’s Story

Have an internal newsletter or other system of communicating with employees? Spotlight what your company is doing to support disability employment and consider sharing the story of one employee’s journey. Not only could it boost morale, but it could also spark a referral idea from an existing for an open position. The sky’s the limit!

Want more ideas? The ODEP has a “31 Days of NDEAM” slideshow available as well as a list of suggestions for employers and employees.
