What about your work, company or role makes you most proud?
I am most proud of the impact that we have on the lives of our clients and the people that work for them. When leaders find their voice and own their impact, their organizations and their people thrive. It’s exciting to be part of that transformation.
What is your favorite binge-worthy show or podcast?
I really enjoyed Mr. Robot and Counterpart, both on Amazon Prime.
What was your first job? What lesson did you learn that you will carry with you?
My first job was at 9 years old, working for my father as a groundskeeper for a baseball diamond and the surrounding property. That was hard work - I learned the value of a dollar!
Can you share a time when you had to reinvent yourself, your product/service or your brand?
For most of my career I have been reinventing myself! I graduated as an Accountancy major, went from a Controller to SAP technology expert to being the leader of a national business development team, then corporate director of technology. I became CEO of a startup, and now I serve as CEO of a business services firm. In each evolution I have gained insights into myself and my strengths that have propelled me into the next phase of my career.
What’s your best “work from home” life hack?
Don’t do it 😊 (just kidding). The separation of “work life” and “personal life” is an illusion anyway – you only have one life. So whether you work from home or in a traditional office setting you need to make choices that reflect your values. My wife and I believe in “living juicy” which for us means making the most of every moment, squeezing every drop of enjoyment out of life and relishing new experiences and fine wines. The way we have set up our business allows for that, but we also have to know what to prioritize and most importantly, when to step away (and when somebody figures that out, let me know!)
What drew you to Chicago as a business or personal home?
The initial draw to Chicago was for family. But it is a beautiful place to live and work, and we love the water, the lakefront, the summers enjoying music in Grant Park and all the other events and activities that are available. Chicago is remarkably clean for a major metropolitan city, and as frequent travelers we appreciate the centralized airport with easy access to the rest of the country and the world. Most importantly, we’ve found our people here in a way that I don’t think a smaller city would have allowed.
Among the people you work with, who inspires you and why?
Founder and Chief Ideas Officer Donna Brighton is a constant inspiration to me. As her title suggests, she is a visionary, endlessly creative and full of ideas for how to move the business forward. She has tremendous compassion for people and is always striving to grow. Her voracious desire to learn brings out the best in me – I have to keep up with her!
2020 has been the year of struggle to find work-life balance, but Scott raises an interesting perspective. The separation of “work life” and “personal life” just might be an illusion. If we only have one life, how will we make decisions that reflect our values - and squeeze every ounce of enjoyment from it? Scotts balance of priorities and efforts to surround himself with those that bring the best out of him are just some of his secrets to success.
