On June 5, 2007, top IT experts from different industries conducted an in-depth and candid discussion on how organizations can add value by utilizing partnerships between IT and lines of business. Participants included: William Grubbs, Executive Vice President, Spherion Corporation; Mike Fuqua, Senior Vice President, Strategic Development, Global Crossing; Garry Kelly, Chief Information Officer, United Airlines; Frank Modruson, Chief Information Officer, Accenture. Mayor Richard M. Daley, City of Chicago, passionately discussed the CPS education system and the bid for the 2016 Summer Olympics, leaving our 1,100 plus members and guests with a better understanding of the true and meaningful partnership between government, business and the community at large. Mayor Daley offered inspirational insights on pertinent issues such as an extended school year, increasing foreign language curriculum, environmental leadership, as well as transportation issues and initiatives. This year's Annual Meeting and Luncheon featured David J. O’Reilly, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Chevron Corporation on May 8, 2007. Mr. O'Reilly's timely remarks on the fundamentals of managing the energy portfolio resonated well with our 600 plus members and guests leaving them with a better understanding of how energy efficiency; protection of core investments; investing in alternatives; and the challenge of environmental stewardship help strategically develop pragmatic solutions to address today’s energy marketplace. Samuel J. Palmisano, Chairman, President & Chief Executive Officer of IBM Corporation, was honored as The Executives’ Club of Chicago’s 2007 International Executive of the Year on April 12, 2007. Mr. Palmisano’s commitment to IBM’s Laws of Global Integration - economics, expertise and openness - has helped build a values-based culture and management system and has paved a road to success that will ensure IBM’s longevity in a rapidly changing global marketplace. Gary D. Forsee, Chairman & Chief Executive Officer, Sprint Nextel Corporation, discussed Sprint Nextel’s vision to reshape the communications industry while focusing on quality and what the customer wants. Mr. Forsee offered insights into the Sprint Nextel’s next-generation wireless network that holds promise to alter the way each of us communicates, and announced that Chicago will be among the first cities to experience this new, high-speed network when it is revealed in early 2008. Alex Devience, Associate Professor of Business Law in the DePaul University College of Commerce, moderated an informative panel discussion on negotiation strategies that fit Young Leaders’ specific needs, core elements of effective negotiation, interest-based negotiation, negotiating with the government and adversarial negotiation. The Club thanks panel members John Cruickshank, Publisher & COO of Chicago Sun-Times; Michael Mensik, Partner, Global IT/Outsourcing Practice Coordinator at Baker & McKenzie; and Sharis Arnold Pozen, Partner at Hogan & Hartson, for sharing their expertise on the subject. Our members and guests had the unique opportunity to celebrate the 100th anniversary of UPS with Michael L. Eskew, Chairman & CEO of UPS. Mr. Eskew shared the company’s history and how it continues to transform itself to meet technology and market challenges. He also offered insights into UPS’s vision to remodel itself into a “one-to-one” business where customer experience is used as a measure for innovation. On January 30, 2007 moderator Susan D. Whiting, Chairman, Nielsen Media Research, Executive Vice President, The Nielsen Company, led panelists Emily L. Barr, President and General Manager, ABC 7 Chicago; Dr. Jim Taylor, Vice Chairman, The Harrison Group; and Rishad Tobaccowala, Chief Executive Officer, Denue and Chief Innovation Officer, Publicis Groupe Media in a discussion titled “Charting a New Course: Communicating in the Digital Age”. On January 25, 2007 the Women’s Leadership Breakfast Series welcomed panelists Ilene Gordon, President and CEO, Alcan Packaging and Senior Vice President, Alcan Inc.; Diane Schueneman, Head of Global Infrastructure Solutions, Merrill Lynch; Perry Yeatman, Vice President – Global Head of External Relations, Kraft Foods; and moderator Jill Smart, Chief Human Resources Officer, Accenture to discuss the topic “Women in Global Business and Leadership – Real Stories, Real Challenges, Real Opportunities”. On January 12, 2007 the Economic Outlook 2007 Conference featured panelists Alan Murray, Assistant Managing Editor, The Wall Street Journal; Diane Swonk, Managing Director & Chief Economist, Mesirow Financial; Dr. Robert "Bob" Froehlich, Chairman of the Investment Strategy Committee, Deutsche Asset Management; and was moderated by Terry Savage, Financial Columnist, Chicago Sun-Times. On December 8, 2006 the Technology Outlook 2007 Conference featured panelists William Avery, Vice President and CIO, Brunswick Corporation; Ira Cohen, Senior Member, Technology, Media and Telecom Investment Banking Group, Goldman Sachs & Co.; John Gentry, Managing Director, CSC Consulting; and James O'Conner, Jr., Vice President, Early Stage Accelerator, Motorola, Inc. On December 8, 2006, George W. Buckley, Chairman, President & CEO of 3M Company, discussed the importance and principal elements of growth oriented leadership, drawing evidence from his own personal experience. Mr. Buckley offered insights into the foundation of building 3M’s core; including technological differentiation and “digital” oriented competencies, unfettered innovation, globalization and, above all, imagination. On November 30, 2006, John C. Compton, Chief Executive Officer of PepsiCo North America, provided expert insight on PepsiCo’s dedication to innovation, international growth, and expanded R&D, to our 300 plus members and guests. Mr. Compton shared PepsiCo’s strategy to keep up with current trends in technology and marketing, as well as to align PepsiCo’s new products to its consumers’ health and overall well-being. On November 15, 2006 the Transatlantic Partnership Luncheon featured Jonathan Evans, Member of the European Parliament and President of the European Parliament Delegation for Relations with U.S. Congress. On October 12, 2006, leading Chicago CIOs were recognized for their contribution to their companies as well as the IT and Business Management industry at the annual presentation of the prestigious CIO of the Year Award. Since its establishment in 2003, this Award presentation has become an important event in Chicago's technology and business community. The Award is presented to the CIO who demonstrated exceptional achievements and leadership in driving business value, contribution to external customers, building business partners, organizational effectiveness, and external recognition. This year's winner is Cathy Brune, Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer of Allstate Insurance Company. On October 12, 2006, panelists provided expert insights into the issues regarding IT's contribution to business leadership, its role as an agent of change, and the benefits of having a CIO on the executive, presenting an exceptional look into how IT and executive leadership can better compliment one another. Among the panelists were Wendy Gillen, Vice President, Midwest Technology Leader, Capgemini; Michael Carlin, Vice President & CIO, Hospira; Richard Shellito, Systems Vice President, State Farm Insurance; and Randy Burdick, Executive Vice President & CIO, OfficeMax. On October 12, 2006, Charles O. Holliday, Jr., Chairman & CEO of DuPont, shared his insights on the necessity of sustainable growth and DuPont's commitment to it. DuPont made this luncheon a carbon neutral event by funding land restoration and the planting of 125 native bottomland hardwood trees in the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife Refuge near Rock Island, Illinois. On October 5, 2006, Gregory C. Case, President and CEO of AON Corporation, discussed the evolution of risk and risk management, as well as the importance of having a strategy to address those risks with a receptive audience of over 300 members and guests. On October 3, 2006 nearly 150 Young Leaders and guests gathered at Gardner Carton & Douglas for the Club's first Young Leaders Development program of the 2006-2007 season, "Necessary Leadership Development Tools Young Future Leaders Need to Know," featuring Yasmin T. Bates, Executive Vice President, Community Afairs & Economic Development, Harris N.A., Kendal Vroman, Managing Director, Corporate Development, Chicago Mercantile Exchange, and moderated by John A. Gable, Senior Vice President, Lee Hect Harrison. During the program, the speakers shared their experiences with audience members about achieving real success, the importance of creating and maintaining relationships, and how to succeed as a younger professional in your team. The program was sponsored in part by Duchossois Industries, Inc. On September 26, 2006, almost 700 members and guests attended the first Women's Leadership Breakfast of the season. Moderator Mary Ann Childers kept the audience laughing and the presentation moving smoothly with her candid and humorous remarks. Lillian Bjorseth's advice on networking and the benefits of doing it efficiently was very valuable, as were Maureen Costello's insights on the value of knowing one's personal style and how it can be perceived in the workplace. Lastly, Leigh Ann Hughes' advice on the importance of a positive attitude and basic people skills in finding success reminded everyone that sometimes it's the simple things that matter most. On September 21, 2006, Glenn F. Tilton, Chairman, President & CEO of UAL Corporation and United Airlines, shared his insights on the progress UAL has made since restructuring began in 2001, and on the company's commitment to being a good corporate citizen. Mr. Tilton also discussed UAL's possible interest in the merger and acquisition market. On September 12, 2006, Robert Mueller, III, Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, informed an audience of almost 200 members and guests about the increased collaboration among the FBI and other US and international agencies in the fight against terrorism. On September 8, 2006, Kevin Turner, Chief Operating Officer of Microsoft Corporation, highlighted Microsoft's goals moving forward. Mr. Turner also described Microsoft's corporate values and the importance of IT leaders having a keen understanding of business principles.
