Our Global Leaders Luncheon on June 10, 2008, featured Duncan L. Niederauer, Chief Executive Officer of NYSE Euronnext, who presented “The Impact of Technology on Financial Markets” to over 650 members and guests. Mr. Neiderauer provided insight on how technology has enabled NYSE Euronext to launch more products and better server their customers, as well as how NYSE Euronext uses technology to achieve its strategic objectives.

During the June 10, 2008, Technology Conference, two sessions were held on the topic of “Technology From the Outside In: Learning from the ‘Natives.’" The first session, “Social Networks – Business Benefits and Applications,” explored real world implementation and integration of social media into well-known enterprises. Moderated by Richard Qualls, Chief Technologist – Midwest Systems Engineering, Sun Microsystems, the session featured Anthony Abbattista, Vice President, Technology Solutions, Allstate Insurance Company, and Warren Habib, Senior Vice President, Digital Platform Development, MTV Networks. The second session, “Alternative Reality: ‘Virtual’ Certainty or ‘Simulated’ Boondoggle?,” explored how hundreds of leading global firms have invested time, effort, and money to explore uncharted territory in product design, marketing, customer interaction, and enterprise-wide communication – all in simulated environments. Moderated by Jeff Sidler, Senior Vice President, Lee Hecht Harrison, the panel featured Scott Lehman, Senior Director, Philips Design, Philips; and Michael Donnelly, Director, Interactive Marketing, The Coca-Cola Company.

On May 23, 2008, The Executives’ Club of Chicago welcomed Her Excellency, Christine Lagarde, Minister of Economy, Industry and Employment of France at a special luncheon in her honor. Minister Lagarde’s message on the importance of reforming France to compete effectively in a changing world resonated well with the 300 plus members and guests in attendance. The luncheon also featured His Excellency, Pierre Vimont, Ambassador of France to the USA; Mayor Richard M. Daley, City of Chicago; and Chicago’s first lady, Maggie Daley.

On May 8, 2008, our 650 plus members and guests had an opportunity to learn first-hand what it takes to build a global company in the 21st Century from E. Neville Isdell, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Coca-Cola Company, at our annual meeting and luncheon. Mr. Isdell’s exceptional presentation highlighted how companies can strategically manage through globalization, the changing nature of international corporations, and the evolving world order.

During the April 29, 2008, Chicago CEO Breakfast, William Wrigley, Jr., Executive Chairman and Chairman of the Board of Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company, discussed the company’s history, culture, and global competitive environment. The 600 plus members and guests in attendance greatly appreciated his insightful remarks on how Wrigley has withstood the short-term pressures and has consistently taken the actions for healthy generational growth by focusing on worldwide talent and innovation.

On April 17, 2008, William A. Osborn, Chairman of Northern Trust Corporation, was honored as the Club’s 2008 International Executive of the Year. Mr. Osborn’s compelling remarks resonated well with our 1,000 plus members and guests, leaving them with a better understanding of how to strategically manage globalization, the current state of the financial markets, and how to prepare for the future.

On February 20, 2008, moderator Ian Morrison, Ph.D., Internationally noted Healthcare Futurist and Author, led panelists Andrew M. Appel, CEO, Chairman Aon Re Global, Aon Consulting; John A. Edwardson, Chairman and CEO, CDW Corporation; Dean Harrison, President and CEO, Northwestern Memorial HealthCare; John B. Menzer, Vice Chairman and CAO, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.; William Novelli, CEO, AARP; and Scott P. Serota, President and Chief Executive Officer, Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, in discussions on universal healthcare. The panelists discussed what universal healthcare means to consumers and the best business practices and innovative approaches employers are using to create the best value proposition for employees and their families. The discussion explored the importance of healthcare to employees and also what healthcare means to employers.

On February 19, 2008, a special luncheon was held honoring His Excellency Shri Kamal Nath, Minister of Commerce and Industry of the Republic of India. The 300 plus audience of business, civic, and political leaders learned first-hand from Minister Nath about India’s major infrastructure development. The luncheon also featured The Honorable Susan Schwab, United States Trade Representative from Washington, D.C., and Mayor Richard M. Daley, City of Chicago.

During the January 31, 2008, Joint Committee Breakfast and Thought-Leader Discussion, panelists Maria Cocco, Columnist; Peter Greenberger, Director, Political Advising, Google; and Alan Webber, Senior Analyst, Forrester Research, Inc. were led by moderator Dean Reynolds, News Correspondent, CBS News Chicago on the topic of "Presidential Politics and the Internet: Power or Poison?" Panelists explored the impact of the political Internet on the upcoming presidential campaign and provided their perspectives on the possible winners and losers.

Morrison, Executive Vice President & CIO, Motorola, and The Executives’ Club of Chicago’s 2007 CIO of the Year Award recipient, in a conversation about “The New Generation of Women: Women Leaders in Tomorrow’s Workplace.” Panelists explored how leaders will evolve in the future work world and how women’s leadership styles will serve as an advantage in managing diverse global teams and stakeholders, mastering technology, building careers, and recruiting the changing talent pool.

On November 13, 2007, Anne M. Mulcahy, Chairman & Chief Executive Officer of Xerox Corporation, discussed the importance of American innovation giving our 700 plus members and guests a better understanding of Xerox’s products, technology, strategy, and people. Putting into perspective the risk the U.S. runs by not investing in our technical future, Ms. Mulcahy left the audience thinking about how they could invest in the infrastructure that first propelled this country to world economic leadership.

Peterson, Founder & President, Syrus Global, in a discussion entitled, “Can You Be an Entrepreneur in a Corporate Setting or Do You Have to Get Out?” This program focused on entrepreneurs in the corporate world, women effecting change with an “intra-preneurial” spirit, and explored how companies create a climate of strategic innovation, with an eye toward forward-thinking hiring and promotion practices.

During the Finance Committee Breakfast on November 5, 2007, John Snow, Chairman of Cerberus Capital Management and Former Secretary of U.S. Treasury, shared his insights on “Private Equity, the Liquidity Crunch and the State of the Global Economy.” Our 400 plus members and guests were captivated by Secretary Snow’s presentation on private equity and the pivotal role it can play in the marketplace. Secretary Snow shared that Cerberus Capital’s investment in Chrysler has created a different, more effective environment where key managerial decisions, such as the recent cut of Chrysler’s fourth quarter production, can be made in a matter of minutes rather than weeks or months.

The annual CIO of the Year Award recognizes the leading Chicagoland CIOs for their contribution to their companies and the industry in the area of IT and business management. Since its establishment in 2003, the Award has become an important event of Chicago’s technology and business community landscape. The Award is presented to the CIO who demonstrated exceptional achievements and leadership in driving business value, contribution to external customers, building business partners, organizational effectiveness, and external recognition. This year’s winner is Patricia B. Morrison, Executive Vice President & Chief Information Officer, Motorola.

The October 2, 2007, New Leaders Development Series program presented “An Evening with Bill Doyle.” At the evening reception and discussion, Bill Doyle, President & CEO of PotashCorp and board member of The Executives Club of Chicago, shared his experiences on establishing executive presence, learned and inherent leadership traits, and what he wishes he would have known before assuming the title of CEO to nearly 170 young leaders.
